Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi’s five-year World Rally Championship campaign
has ended after his main sponsor Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA)
decided not to field a team for the new season beginning in January next
year, according to Abu Dhabi newspaper Sports 360.
Al Qassimi
drove for Team Abu Dhabi, making over 40 appearances at the world level
since his debut at Rally Finland in 2007, scoring 30 points and
achieving a best result of fifth in Australia in September this year
with co-driver Michael Orr.
As well as driving a Fiesta RS on
some world championship events, Al Qassimi was the brand ambassador for
the ADTA and the Abu Dhabi Junior Team, which fielded a brace of Subaru
Impreza STI WRXs in the Production Car World Rally Championship, driven
by Bader Al Jabri and Majed Al Shamsi.
While the ADTA didn’t
offer comment, Al Qassimi confirmed to that his stint in world rallying
was over, at least for the foreseeable future.
