TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute mother of two is facing child neglect charges after police responded to a bus driver’s call of concern.
Misty Shavarebi, 34, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Friday where Judge David Bolk found probable cause for her arrest on charges of child neglect, possession of marijuana and battery with injury.
Terre Haute Police Detective Rick Decker testified that officers were sent to the home for a well-being check after a Head Start bus driver who dropped off a child at a home in the 1500 block of Chestnut reported that the child’s mother was seen arriving at the home intoxicated. Police reported that they found Shavarebi at the home with bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, unsteady on her feet, and with the odor of alcohol on her breath. They also found a 40-ounce bottle of beer on the table that was two-thirds empty, Decker said.
The detective testified that Shavarebi told police she had been drinking “because it was St. Patrick’s Day and she was celebrating because she’s Irish.” Police also found a partially smoked marijuana cigarette on the kitchen table.
The officers reported finding little food in the kitchen, and that the residence was allegedly unkempt.
They found two children, ages 2 and 4, in a bedroom watching television. The children were afraid to come out of the bedroom into the room with their mother, Decker said.
The older child had dried blood on her hands, and a cut on the left side of her head where blood had matted the hair. The child also had a bruise near her eye, and an examination revealed other bruises on her back and arm, Decker said.
The child told police that her mother had hit her in the head with some car keys, causing the injury. The child showed the police the keys, which she pulled from her mother’s purse.
Decker said he called Child Protective Services to the scene, who removed the children.
Shavarebi made a statement in court.
“I would never hurt one of my children,” she said, adding that the children were not afraid of her, but of the police officers in their home.
The woman also said she had been drinking at her home, and her child was hurt playing at home.
The judge found probable cause for her arrest, and set her bail at $25,000 with no 10 percent allowed. Formal charges are to be filed by Wednesday.
